Meet Zigongosaurus: The Giant That Once Roamed the Lantern Capital of China

May 21, 2026

Did you know that Zigong, China, the city famous for its breathtaking lantern festivals, was also once home to one of the largest dinosaurs to ever walk the earth?

The Zigongosaurus was a long-necked, plant-eating giant that roamed what is now Sichuan Province over 150 million years ago, characterized by its long neck and tail, small head, and stout pillar-like legs. Its name literally means "Zigong lizard," a nod to the city where its fossils were first unearthed. Scientists believe its long neck with rod-like vertebrae may have allowed it to graze both low ground vegetation and higher tree canopies, making it a highly adaptable feeder for its time. At around 15 meters (50 feet) in length, it was roughly the size of a school bus.

Zigongosaurus lived alongside other fascinating creatures including the herbivorous stegosaurids Huayangosaurus and Tuojiangosaurus, as well as carnivorous dinosaurs, painting a vivid picture of a rich and diverse prehistoric ecosystem right beneath the streets of modern-day Zigong.

It is a fun reminder that the places that spark our imagination today have been sparking wonder for millions of years. From ancient giants to glowing lanterns, Zigong has always had a way of leaving people in awe.
